A few things of interest this morning…

December 17, 2004

Apple iPhone prediction confirmed.

I didn’t think it would be long before this was confirmed. Personally i’m sold already and I haven’t even seen it! I’m such an Apple whore.

Targeting Small Screens - Stopdesign

Doug’s back with a great writeup on targeting small screens for your designs.

WDW2004 keynotes available as video

Speakers include: Jeffrey Zeldman, Jason Fried, Ethan Marcotte & Molly Holzschlag

On another note. The migration to Expression Engine is going well although still quite a lot to do with the design. Some of the portfolio may have to be redesigned again due to EE not being able to do some of the conditional logic I want it to. Never mind, there’s always a different approach.

BBC Wales music site launched

December 02, 2004

Following a few months of work the BBC Wales music site has been relaunched with a more advanced technical backend, partial CSS and much tighter information architecture.

Designed Christmas Cards

December 02, 2004

Christmas card design for this year

Last year we spent a fortune on generally crappy cards. So this year I thought i’d do them myself and after a very reasonable quote from a printer I realised we’d actually be saving ourselves quite a bit of cash. Following on from Andy Budd’s idea, it’d be nice to see any designery Christmas Cards you may be producing. Post the url to the image on your server in the comments.

Typography rant

November 26, 2004

Sometimes, ‘designers’ just p**s me right off.

Let me explain.

I’m a regular reader on Stylegala, a website dedicated to css / web standards and design. It’s a great site. In fact my site was featured on it in August. On every entry on Stylegala you can comment on the sites featured. I had a quick look today and came across a comment thread which annoyed me so much I had to write about it here! The thread in question is the one about the site Epocrates. David at Stylegala gives it a pretty good writeup, but he is disagreed with, quite strongly, in the thread of comments. Have a read of them.

Apple green is *so* the new black

November 15, 2004

I am just a sucker for Apple green at the moment. In case you hadn’t noticed, it is everywhere! So, on the weekend I bought an apple green t-shirt and here’s a nice apple green website for company called Forty Media, nice design, nice christmassy look about it at the moment. The tone of voice is just right as well.

Cardiff Screen Festival - Focus on Interactive zzzz

November 15, 2004

Having just attended the morning sessions at this annual event (my first time btw) I just had to get something down here before I forget.

The thing about these kind of events is that most people want to get at least something out of it, personally as well as professionally. You might want to find out, as a designer, what is happening in Wales at the moment in terms of New Media. You might, as a client, want to see what the possibilities are for your product or service. Invariably events like this fail to deliver on these simple wants and needs.

Rather nice site

November 05, 2004

Having featured on Stylegala when this site was launched I regularly look at the gallery and say the odd thing in the forums. Occasionally a site featured on the gallery jumps out at me as being something rather special - today was one of those days.

Simmons College website is very refreshing, not only in terms of CSS, but also in terms of design. The palette is spot on, in design trend terms - earthy, pastels, calming colours. The inspiration is from the illustrations used on the site (and it’s nice to see illustrations being used). The typography is also very tasteful. Clean serifs and san serifs throughout, although sometimes they don’t quite work and look a bit cluttered.

Very nice site though and well worth ten minutes of your time looking round it.

A picture of Mark BoultonI'm a graphic designer from near Cardiff in the UK. I've been a designer for over ten years now and primarily work on the web. I'm still partial to a bit of print every now and then though. I used to work for Agency.com in London as an Art Director before working as a Senior Designer for the BBC in sunny Cardiff. This was all before I took leave of my senses and formed my own design consultancy, Mark Boulton Design Ltd.

I've got a thing about grids and typography and occasionally ramble on about them to anyone who will listen.

If you're after simple, clean and effective web design; let me know.
