Hey MArk - great collection. I know it might be a bit commercial, but you've got to hand it to the guys who pieced together Jamie Oliver's 'Jamie at Home' cook book - that it just a beautiful and utterly engaging piece of design. I suppose it helps formulating your print finishing strategy when you know it's destined to sell X million copies! Thanks for the post

I have found that even though I try hard to design something with those little spikes of joy, I always feel like I can do much much better. Totally buying both the books when I get the dough.

'Making books joyful things isn’t too hard. Making purchasing books is. How do you make that process more than enjoyable? How do you create spikes of joy?'

This is something that is very important for the sustainability of books (physical books, not PDF books) now that we are in the age of the iPad and Kindle.

Not only do you need to ask "how do we make purchasing books more enjoyable?", but also "how do we make the act of reading books more joyful?"

Anyway, I've always liked the little surprises you get in some books like a beautifully designed, letter pressed bookmark.

I used to dream of being a writer when I was younger, but I never got more then 20-30 pages into a novel before my ideas dried up. I just recently looked in the Amazon self publishing option. I definitely think that is the way to go.

A lot of parallels here with the notion of 'designing for delight'.

Giles Colborne has a great presentation on just that.
