The personal disquiet of

Pink is the new black

Once again, I’ve gone all Pink for October support of National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Okay, it’s national in the US, but in this global world we live in, I thought I’d once again support the campaign.

Like most people, I’ve been directly effected by cancer. Firstly, I lost my grandmother to breast cancer when I was about ten years old—at the time, I didn’t really understand what it was, or why she was so sick—but it still left a lasting impression. Secondly, I’ve had friends—young and old—diagnosed with some form of cancer. Some got better.

It’s only in later life I’ve understood how neglect of a condition or problem can have terminal consequences. Yet, it still amazes and bothers me that people ignore such blatant symptoms by burying their head in the sand. Cancer awareness is getting much better, no doubt about it, but still some people think it’s a problem that will go away if ignored.

I try and do my bit. Donating will help of course, but money can only go so far. Awareness of yourself, possible symptoms and, most importantly, when to go to a doctor, can make a real impact today.

2% of breast cancer patients are male (says Gender Education & Advocacy (I’d’ve used the cite element there if it was allowed (…and the code element there))).

Good to see people outside of the US getting in on the Pink For October action. I see no reason why support should stop at our borders.

There’s a typo in your source code (“ref” instead of “href”) so the link (http://pinkforoctober.org/) doesn’t work.

Pink for October is a great idea!  I’d never heard of it here in NZ, but maybe I can start a trend…

Thanks somewhat for the reminder. I had intended to go pink for my site but was caught up with a busy schedule. I guess its never too late to do it.

Its significant for me because my wife suffered from BC this year. Thankfully, she is all well after surgery and looking good on our road to recovery.

How I found out about “PINK for October” was that Patrick Haney had twittered about it. The reason I followed through making my website pink was that my mother just had surgery to remove ovarian cancer just about two weeks ago. She just came home today.

I noticed that your “GO” arrow and when you hover over your name in your head is still green. Not sure if you left it to see who could find it.

Thanks for all the great articles and SXSW talks.

Gotcha! You’re not all pink. Hover on the logo, top-right. Isn’t that ironical? Turns up that MARK BOULTON is still green underneath!

This is probably my first post here, so … great site, great articles, nice pink. But still, gotcha!

“effected by cancer” should be “affected by cancer”
