Objective

A vanilla, undesigned vocab application had been built by the BBC Wales technical team which was ready to apply site wide and needed a design to be applied. Requirements were that the application had to accessible from any webpage, sit on any colour, and also had to be, in branding terms, applicable to any language.

Solution

There were several elements to the design and branding of Vocab.

The logo and strapline were designed to be effective with the use of any language being translated, also the brand had to reflect national BBC guidelines.

The console itself had two states - On and Off. The console served three purposes - 1. It tells the user if Vocab is ON or OFF. 2. It tells the user how to switch Vocab On or Off and 3. It provides a link to find out what Vocab is. It does all of this effectively in a very small space and bilingually. The console also uses CSS to allow the panel to be designed on a site by site basis if required.

Vocab also had to have a help site built. This was an area in which the brand for Vocab was allowed to shine through. Light, friendly colours were chosen to give Vocab a ‘service’ rather than an ‘application’ feel. This was very important. Vocab had to feel to the user as an integrated service, not a bolt-on application.
